That’s right, folks! Tomorrow (April 16) Adrian Younge and Ghostface Killah will release their album Twelve Reasons to Die - what Younge calls a RZA and Ennio Morricone inspired “score to a vintage, Italian horror film.” And because Fem’s feelings about Ghostface are just as conflicted as hir feelings about Baby in House of 1000 Corpses, The Whorer is going to take a slightly-different-than-usual approach to horror films and discuss this operatic album on next week’s podcast.

Alas, Women in Horror Month (WiHM) is officially over, but don’t let that stop you from discussing women in the industry. Stay informed and be inclusive! Special thanks to all the wonderful ambassadors! Here are some highlights:

* After the great panel discussions about gender at GMX, Fem was excited to continue the conversation with Librarian of the Dead’s Women in Horror Comics blog series.

* Women in Horror Month launched their official podcast and Fem and Meredith were guests on Part 2 of the inaugural episode. Fem is a horrible interview, but you should definitely listen to everyone else! New episodes will be released monthly.

* We discovered the more articulate and sophisticated version of us, Faculty of Horror, via co-host Lady Hellbat. We also discovered Sci-Fi & Squeam, a podcast for queer geeks, and Bad Reputation, a feminist pop culture adventure blog.

* Our favorite Zombie Grrrlz (back from a bit of a hiatus) posted a new podcast episode about the Soska sisters.

Reel Cultures vs. Real Cultures: Continuing the Conversation on Under-representation in Film

While we’re celebrating Women in Horror Month, The Whorer would also like to address the subject of under-representation in the film industry more generally.

With the racial controversy around Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (you can find a tasting of it here, here, and here) and February also being African-American / Black History Month, I want to highlight a book written by my favorite author, bell hooks, titled Reel to Real: Race Class and Sex at the Movies. One of the issues hooks explores is the social impact of white filmmakers creating content about black culture, discussing films like Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction as well as others like Jennie Livingston’s documentary Paris is Burning. She also writes about black filmmakers like Spike Lee (who has also contributed to the Django conversation), Charles Burnett, and Julie Dash, and meditates on the future of black cinema. (And for all you locals, there’s a piece on Larry Clark’s and Nashville native Harmony Korine’s Kids.) The book is a mix of essays and transcribed conversations. It’s not horror focused, but it’s an important topic nonetheless. And if you’re worried about it being too academic or dense, don’t be! Her writing style is very accessible and straightforward.

Relating back to the western theme of Django and thinking about Disney’s upcoming release of The Lone Ranger, I also want to recommend Neil Diamond’s documentary (no, not the singer) Reel Injun. It explores the representation of Native American’s throughout the history of film and challenges myths and stereotypes like the noble savage and the general Hollywood homogenization of indigenous cultures. It also discusses well-known Native actors, including Chief Buffalo Child Long Lance who after being outed as multiracial and part black was shunned from social circles and committed suicide in 1931. Diamond also focuses on the importance of Native voices in cinema and highlights works like Chris Eyre’s and Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signals and Zacharias Kunuk’s Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. Again, not horror focused, but important to keep in mind for our own explorations here at The Whorer.
