Can’t believe we forgot to talk about the way Stefan just “inherited” the king’s daughter!
I don’t remember it being implied Aurora was not Stefan’s daughter.
What I can’t believe I forgot to mention is the whole von Sternberg /
Dietrich complex because really that is what is going here with Jolie. The whole film is just a medium for her to be fetishized. I’m concerned with the psychological parallels between mainstream movies and pornography. Things get interesting when you consider all the positive messages we found in the film.
Interesting too we didn’t mention Jolie’s double mastcetomy. It’s a positive it was a non-issue for us, and the public, but since so much of this episode, of this whole show, is about body images I’m surprised we didn’t go there. I feel like there was jar labelled DICK MOVE and I just opened it. I won’t apologize.
If you pay enough attention to this space to be reading this, I’d recommend The Film Talk’s Maleficent episode. Co-host Jett Loe’s analysis of what’s wrong with film’s look is far more insightful than mine but I think we’re talking about the same thing. Loe is a professional photographer so his linguistic capital regarding such matters is robust.
Listen to their Under the Skin episode too. It gets fun when Loe accuses co-host Higgins of misogyny after Higgins finds misogyny in the aforementioned movie.
Grab it now at http://www.thefilmtalk.com/ before they both go behind their paywall. Better yet, donate to us, and if you have any money left over, donate to them.
The Film Talk used to be on our resources page but they were removed because of gender bias. BOOM. I went there. DOUBLE DICK MOVE PUN INTENDED.
I’m off to enjoy my vacation.
i LOVED The Film Talk. Sad that it has ended, apparently for good. I hope your podcast continues for a long time.
